NANISH SHONTIE: Agriculture Plan

Now that Nanish Shontie is on its own land, we plan to grow most of the food the community will need to feed its residents and visitors. Utilizing traditional native values and organic growing techniques, the garden will provide root vegetables during the entire year and green vegetables, grapes and berries during the three-season growing time.

The garden will also provide a constant harvest of herbs. We will also grow seeds to sell to seed banks for farmers, to counter the hybridization and gene-altering practices of major agri-businesses.

A small herd of goats will provide our dairy needs. Sheep will provide wool and food. The existing fruit trees will provide apples and many other varieties of both fruit and nut trees will be planted. Beehives will provide abundant honey.

We also plan to develop and maintain a fish farm for harvesting the fish that will serve our needs.

The land itself is abundant with many wild plants that are edible and nutritious. It is also abundant with blackberries, blueberries and huckleberries. We will also be working with other local farmers trading crops and animals to meet both of our needs.
